Knights' Tournament
The building challenge for this month is "make a robotic arm". I, happening to love amusement park attractions, translated that into "think of a ride that is a robotic arm". Naturally, this awesome, one-of-a-kind adventure ride from Legoland popped into my head. I had to build it. I didn't spend too long on the design itself. Rather, I just tried to find a way to make it light-weight and consistent. Using two motors, the ride moves smoothly, the chair rotates freely, and the minifigs smile willingly.

Programming and LDD

The programming was simple, yet long. It consisted of the green "move" block over and over again, 30 of them, to be exact, with a few "wait until" blocks thrown in. This project took more imagination and creativity than I expected. Occasionally it was a challenge to think of what it should do next, but I always looked to the ride itself for inspiration. 33 blocks were used to get 25 seconds of video. It was fun, and is always worth it. This is the 4th NXT I've made. See below for instructions for the LDD file.

LDD Instructions

Here's some helpful advice for the LDD file I uploaded (See "Programming and LDD"). I was unable to figure out how to place the motors on the bricks that support them, so I took some pictures and screen shots to help explain. Near the left of the main picture you'll see two sets of Legos. The bigger set, as displayed in picture 2, goes where it is displayed in picture 3. And the smaller set, consisting of two bricks and displayed in picture 4, goes where it is displayed in picture 5. I hope these pictures are clear and easy enough to understand. If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks!

  • Thanks everyone! Warba98- I think you should be able to make it using only the NXT 2.0, although I'm not sure. I have two NXT sets and I also took apart all my Bionicles, but I don't think I used more pieces than one NXT set came with (besides the minifigs and the green board).

  • I liked that ride too. I really like to ride extreme rides all the time and if you can believe it, I wish that the ride at LEGOland was more nauseating. Great job on your project. If you were to add anything though, I think it should be a loading platform to make it more realistic.

  • very nice! great idea! It does look kind of "shoddy" though... :D
may I ask you: what is that disturbing rattle sound on the video?
