Mr. Dice Guy
Our family received Mindstorms 2.0 for Christmas, so this is our first project. My Dad and I decided to enter the Robotic Arm Challenge and design a robot that was just for fun. We wanted to build an arm that would help us play dice games. We designed and built “Mr. Dice Guy”. This robotic arm senses a dice cup when it’s placed in front of him. He then says, “object detected”, picks up the cup, shakes it several times and dumps the dice onto the table. The RGB leds change color based on the progress. We built the claw first. It needed to be strong enough to pick up and hold the dice cup securely. Next, we attached the “wrist” servo motor. This motor does the shaking and tipping. The NXT is connected to the base assembly where the “elbow” motor is mounted. That motor does all of the lifting. The biggest problem we encountered was that the servo motor used for lifting wasn’t powerful enough to lift the arm, claw, and the dice cup on it’s own. That was our version one. For V2, we rebuilt the lifting portion to include a gear ratio of 5:1. By increasing the motor power by five times, it now lifts the arm with no problem. This robotic arm adds a lot of fun to any game that uses dice.

Version 2.0 - The 5:1 Gear Ratio

The addition of the gears fixed the problem that we had with the servo motor being under powered on it's own. a few extra beams added reenforcement to this powerful joint.

Version 2.0 - LED Stage indicators

The color sensor acts as an indicator that changes at the three stages: Green=Ready, Red=Shaking, and Blue=Reset.
