Motorized RC LEGO Desert of Destruction
This is my biggest and best project, Motorized RC Desert of Destruction. It consists of the motorized X-treme Daredevils truck, the remote control for the motorized X-treme Daredevils Truck, and the motorized Backyard Blasters Vehicle. Motorized desert of Destruction uses 2 NXT motors, 2 touch sensors, 2 NXTs, 1 Lego 9V motor, and 1 Lego 9V Battery box. To learn more about this project, read the following sections: The Truck, The Front of the Truck, The Steering, The Back of the Truck, The Remote Control, The Backyard Blasters Vehicle, and The Program.

The Truck

The Truck is the main part of Motorized Desert of Destruction. It took about 2-3 hours to build. It is not especially fast, but it is quite fast for something of it's size. It looks a lot like the original truck.

The Front of the Truck

The front of the truck contains the drive motor. I had to remove the inside to fit it in. I put the driver minifigure head in because there was a bit of extra room. The front wheel are driven directly from the motor.

The Steering

The Steering was the hardest part to make. I actually took out the whole front of the back section to make it. I put the part that I took out back in in the end. I had to raise some parts of this area to fit the motor in.

The Back of the Truck

It was very easy to fit the NXT in the back of the truck. I did not have to modify the outside at all.

The Remote Control

The remote control is very similar to the nxtprograms 5 button remote control. It uses an NXT and 2 touch sensors. It also has a wire guide so that the wires do not get in the way.

The Backyard Blasters Vehicle

The Backyard Blasters Vehicl is controlled by a lego 9V motor and battery box. The motor has an axle leading to a gearbox that turns the wheels. The motor does not have much torque, so it cannot move on carpet and has a hard time moving on tile. I got the motor from Lego #4094 (Motor Movers). The wire connecting the motor to the battery box is quite long (see picture 4).

The Program

The program is very similar to the 5 button remote control and race car programs from nxtprograms, so I give all credit to nxtprograms. File 1 is the remote program, file 2 is the program for the NXT that motorizes Desert of Destruction.

  • Thanks. That's a good idea, but I did not do that for 2 reasons. 1. I do not have power functions. 2. The Backyard Blasters car is small and is mostly lego. It would be hard to put a technic motor in and impossible to fit the motor, battery box, and IR receiver in.
