How to Post a Comment on NXTLOG
A friendly message from the NXTLOG Moderators...

The Commenting feature on NXTLOG has become very popular! It's a great way for NXTLOGgers to leave complimentary feedback, ask questions, and have a dialogue about MINDSTORMS NXT projects.

Leaving a comment on someone’s NXTLOG project is like joining in on a conversation. Good “commenters” add to the conversation in an informative and friendly way. Become a great NXTLOG commenter by keeping these simple guidelines in mind BEFORE you comment.

Add NEW information

More than ONE person leaving the same comment is too much (and not ORIGINAL). Read the thread of comments before you comment to make sure that the message you leave offers something NEW to the conversation.

Don't comment for the sake of commenting

DON'T comment just to see your username on a NXTLOG. DO comment if you wish to add something valuable to the thread of comments.

K.I.S.S.

Keep It Simple and Specific! Keep your comments short and to the point. NXTLOGger's who only say "Cool!" all the time may gain the reputation for being unoriginal commenters. If you leave a comment, say something MORE than just "Cool!" say something SPECIFIC about the NXT project that makes it "Cool!" Also... using too many !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in a comment is NOT Keeping It Simple and Specific. (It can also can cause eye strain, may make readers think that you are shouting, and it may wear out the ! key on your keyboard. So PLEASE use !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sparingly.)

PLAY NICE! and PLAY SAFE!

If you disagree with something in a project or in a comment, PLAY NICE and add to the conversation in a friendly and respectful way. DON'T leave your e-mail or your full name in a comment because it's not safe to leave your personal contact information on a public website. DON'T place in links in comments (or projects) to NXT videos hosted on websites that are not your own. Many video sites have content on them that are not appropriate for NXTLOG visitors. DO PLAY SAFE and help to make NXTLOG a safe and fun online community.

Stay on Topic

It is not a good idea post a comment on a project about a NXT Snowmobile that says, "I like the sun!" Please STAY ON TOPIC.

No Double Posting or Cross Posting

Double Posting or Cross Posting is leaving the SAME message on the same or multiple projects. No one wants to read the same comments over and over!

What does that say? Oh... Spelling Matters! Well do you best. Everyone who visits NXTLOG wants to read and understand what you have to say. So, do you best to check your spelling and punctuation BEFORE you publish a comment.

Give Credit to the MINDSTORMS Community

If you want to share an idea that you learned from another member of the MINDSTORMS community, give them credit. (Everyone appreciates a little praise).

Don't comment when you are feeling angry

No one is at their best in when they are feeling angry. If you find yourself angrily typing a comment, STOP, take a breath, and give it a day. Revisit the thread when your head is clear.

Someone is reading your comments

All comments on NXTLOG are moderated (read by the MINDSTORMS NXT team) before they are published. So if you don't see your post online, it may be still be in the moderation queue, or it may have been rejected because... 1. The comment was a repeat of a comment previously posted by another user 2. You weren't "Playing Nice" in your comment 3. The comment had personally identifiable information (like an e-mail or full name) 4. The comment was a Double Post 5. The comment was off topic 6. The comment had a link to a website that has inappropriate content on it 7. The comment just had way to many !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and sent the NXTLOG moderator into shock

  • Thx I think this is very usful to know why our post where rejected and to control in a better way the comunnity.
    But I think there is one problem.
    Double posting is very dificult to avoid becouse when you post something you dont see comments of people that are not yet published becouse moderator haven't watch it.

  • Hei, dont for be mad, but i think it would be easyer if you the moderator do not had to read them before posting, but i know you have to, so the NXTLOG can be safe.
    I like this "Project" cause I have tryed to just only "cool" and it doesnt were posted, so i tried to make sentences out of it so it should be posted, and it doesnt were posted again, and then was the time i begun to be mad, but now i understand why it doesnt were posted, so THANK YOU FOR THE INFRMATION!     To answer some questions:

    -The pictures on this project were created by the MINDSTORMS.com web designer :)
    -The number of characters per comment are limited to keep the design and code neat and organized (and also so posts don't get tooooooo long)
    -We would also like to see more .rbt files, more pictures, more unique NXT projects, and more steps documented in projects

    I think these 'rules' are very usefull, but when I design a robot I don't want to share: for example the program that controlls the NXT perfectly, because the whol idea of the NXT is that you learn designing by your own and that you will learn how to programm the right program for the NXT.

  • To ericlegomeer: I actually agree that "designing your own" and learning on your own are really important (not to mention fun!) aspects of the NXT... but it's also true that some folks learn better by seeing more examples (especially well explained ones, with comments on the .rbt files, or explainations of the picture or mechanism). I think there's room for both styles in the NXTlog.

  • For the record, I typically will NOT accept comments such as: Cool, Nice, Awesome, anything with more than 3 exclamation points (!!!) or question marks (???), Great idea, any single word comments (thanks - ok, cool, etc), anything negative or mean to the designer, anything negative about the submission such as "dumb" or "bad idea" or "boring" - to be continued...

  • What I will accept: compliments on a design that are more than 1 sentence, good questions that have not already been asked, and inquiries about the design. If you're going to submit a comment, put some thought into it and write something more than just "COOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!" - if a person has taken the time to put up a design and you absolutely MUST comment, then take the time to provide a useful comment that you've put some thought into.

    "Don't write in all capital letters - It hurts people's ears and isn't correct grammer"
    I've seen a few projects that look like they were written with caps lock on.

    We all know that the law exist so that we all 'play nice'. So I need to ask this, what if we don't really know how to 'play nice' when posting our projects? Will the worst case senario be rejecting our projects?

    Could we have a post about 'Do's and Don'ts when posting a project' or a FAQ section?
    I think that would be very useful for both NXTLOG users and moderators. I posted an unregistered animated gif picture and my post got rejected for it. I'm sure moderators don't want history to repeat itself.

  • Does / can Lego provide a tool that makes it easy for users to document their designs in a similar way to its user manual? A simple drawing tool that has all the graphic images of all the parts, allows you to select components into small groups, and aids 3D views would be ideal and should not be too complicated to develop. Alternatively, a full publication of GIFs for all the separate pieces would allow me to create some simple documentation using Microsoft word or similar.

    Answer: We try not to accept multiple posts of the same phrases like "cool" and "wow" Although you think you might have submitted the only "wow," there may have been others in the queue - Saying WHY you think it's a "wow" robot will get your comment published.

    Quick comment on the section "n most recent comments out of nn... [view all]" seen on all project pages:

    It actually orders the comments by oldest to most recent so in order to see the most recent you'll have to select "view all"

  • I think you should be allowed to comment in any language you like. All you need is a translator, like "Sherlock" on Apple Macintosh OSX.

  • Acantle: lego actualy DOES have a 3D modeling tool called "LEGO Digital Designer" and it is available through designbyme.lego.com.

  • Lego Mindstorms is cool, but I just got a Tetrix set which I use with the NXT, and construction wise it is WAY stronger and more advanced since the parts are made of Aluminum. I would highly recommend just buying the Tetrix Base set and using with the NXT brick and parts from the first set.

  • Can someone tell me if they're having the same problem with their NXTs? My NXT will not respond to any feedback from sensors twice. (For example; it will not accept any 2 presses of any NXT buttons in the program, and it will not respond to more than 1 touch sensor or any 1 touch sensor twice.) The battery is at 8 and I've only had this NXT about 5 months.

  • I have just started to work with my daughter on her NXT 2.0 kit. We are having problems with the light sensor and the NXT software. The Software will not allow me to change the port to 3 (the one the brick uses) it wants to use 1. I can program from the brick, but it is very basic, I cannot use the software to program the light sensor. I have updated firmware. Any suggestions?

  • agentsky1022, some symbols do weird things like that on NXTLOG. The quotation marks are one of those symbols. I usually use apostrophes/single quotation marks. Quotation marks give you this: " ; I usually write it like: 'The Pirates and the NXTfied Theater'.

  • @natecom1 you will need to learn the mindstorms programming language.. you can't do it with the program that comes with mindstorms
